How much does a website really cost?

December 25, 2018

Short Answer:

This is a complicated topic, because each business has different needs when it comes to their website & branding. Pricing typically ranges from $6,000 and goes all the way up to $150,000+ depending on company size, scope of the build, and overall complexity of the website.

Long Answer:

There are several questions that will influence the price you pay to have your website designed and built:

Do you already have brand deliverables (i.e. brand book, logo, secondary logo, colors & typography)?

  • This will influence the price. A brand identity has many elements to it. You need a fully developed visual brand to avoid being charged for branding. A lot of times at margo&bert we have clients who have some branding elements but not enough to build an entire website, so we adjust the price and fill in what might be missing.

Is this a new build or a rebuild?

  • This cost is different depending on the agency. Sometimes having to comb through all of the old design, content, & code is more time intensive than building a completely new site.

How many pages is the build?

  • This is a confusing one for many clients. “Pages” are not just the “about page.” An “about” page might contain 8 actual pages. A page is the height of your computer screen, so if you scrolling on any page there are multiple pages to that page. I know, it’s confusing. At margo&bert we use the page count to determine the cost of the project, but it is not the only influencing factor.

How many bells and whistles are you wanting to add?

  • This influences the price more than any other factor. A simple portfolio site with an about, contact, & work page would be more affordable. Once you start adding things like, accounts, forms, e-commerce, calendars, newsletters, galleries, etc. all of these things add to the cost of your site.

What is your purpose moving forward with your website?

  • Is this a site that you will be updating regularly with content? Will you just be putting it up to legitimize your business? Are you using this as a marketing tool? The price will fluctuate based on the complexity of the build.

My biggest piece of advice is to reach out to a designer or studio if you are looking to invest in a website and just ask what they would charge for your project. They might want to hop on a call and talk it over, which will help you get an idea of what working with them would be like, and also help you refine what you are looking for. Every shop is going to charge something different and this is no small investment, so shop around and find the right fit for your company.
